Mikey grins with the pat. It was familiar and natural and made him feel like a kid back home in the sewers again. Something he was really needing again.

He hated a lot of things about their most recent mission to rescue Anemone, not least of all how their journey through the sewers has tainted his memory of home.

He was caught a little off guard by Donnie's inquiry. Out of the two brothers he had here, Donnie was the least likely to ask about how he was doing. It wasn't totally out of the picture (as the purple turtle has just so graciously proven) and it wasn't the whole reason Mikey had called to him to aid. Still a little surprising none the less and Mikey's expression flickers a moment before he is grinning again.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I mean. That last mission wasn't great but we all made it out and we're all alive and mostly unharmed so it's not all that much different from anything back in earth, right?"

He hoped Donnie wouldn't pick up on the strain in his voice.

He holds out his hand. "Here, let me see if I can get past this next bit. I'll beat the next boss like a breeze now."

Mikey takes the controller and twists around to sit up full, crossing his legs under him. He puts all his focus back on the TV as he starts the game up again but it's clear to any who knows him that he's still listening. He just... He needs to keep his hands busy, keep himself occupied. It's easier when he can't seen his brother's face. Easier when Donnie can't see his.

"I guess." He doesn't bring up the Shredder. He doesn't bring up the Kraang. They've already been there and Donnie's been distant enough without the reminder. The more Mikey had been thinking about it, the more he's glad his younger/older brother wasn't there. Better to save him the pain. Though, he supposed it didn't make Donnie happier in the long run.

Mikey hisses as he nearly missed a jump.

"Things are a bit weirder here, and that's saying something. We're from New York." He shoots Donnie a grin. "But we've got each other and we got hope and we'll make it through, right? We always do."

Mikey relaxes a little bit when Donnie doesn't press any further. Fine. Things were fine. This was normal brothers hanging out, playing video games. They didn't need to worry about any of that stuff that had happened the Cathedral of Mirrors. They were together. They were fine.

He runs his tongue over the new protruding fangs in his mouth. A new habit not that he's getting used to the fresh intrusion. He doesn't even realize he's doing it most of the time.

"You wanna switch to a two player?" He was making good progress on this one, but he wasn't sure he was super into it at the moment after Donnie beat that boss. He would rather play something with his brother anyways.

This time when Mikey smiles it has far less energy, but it's a little more genuine, a little less forced.

"Let me grab a controller," he said with a little more energy and scrambled from his bean bag to grab said controller (the purple one of course) and handing it to Donnie.

He flops back into his seat and flips back to the console menu and scrolls through the games.

"What are you thinking? Co-op?" He gets the feeling that they're not too much in the mood for a fighting game at the moment.

orangerazzmatazz: (No way!)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-29 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)

Mikey licks over his fangs again and then sticks out the tip of his tongue as he scrolls the games and tries to figure out one to play.

"Oh! This one is a cooking game! This looks cute!" he says, shifting a little in his seat.

He opens the game before Donnie can give his opinion on the matter.

It starts off innocent enough. Cute characters, a small little top down kitchen view and a simple tutorial. Overall, the game itself isn't that hard.

It's as more elements and orders and such are added that it started getting in a word, chaotic.

Really, it isn't all that long before Mikey is yelling at Donnie to chop more lettuce but also grab the boiling pot on the other side of the board as he runs his character around trying to free up a plate and making sure he gets this order correct for the three customers now in the red.

Don't worry Donnie! He's careful! (It's still bound to happen, but Mikey isn't really thinking about that....)

"Don't worry! I won't have to ask you if this is how you cook! Man!"

He throws up a hand as he sends out the wrong order and the timer goes off, ending the round. The finish screen comes up, showing no stars and ultimately, a failure to the level. It wasn't the first time and likely wouldn't be the last.

Mikey twists around to sit upside down in his bean bag as if that would help. "Okay, this time, just focus on cutting vegetables and I'll make sure we have clean dishes and meat."

Mikey shoots him a look. "No way! If you learn to cheat I'll never win!"

He isn't given much time to protest as the new round starts and he is drawn back into the game.

It starts off well enough, they seem to coordinating a little better, keeping to their tasks and staying out of each other's ways, but it isn't long until things start falling behind and orders start piling up. Mikey turns back over, falling out of his bean bag and scrambling to his knees while he still struggles to keep hold of the controller and keep his eyes on the screen.

There is no less yelling, but at least when they finish the level, it's finally with at least one star, allowing them to pass the level.

"That level of Jupiter Jim's underpants," he grumbles. "Hopefully the next one is better."

This isn't exactly the charming, relaxing co-op cooking game he was hoping for, but if asked, he is having fun. And it is doing the intended purpose of distracting and most importantly, making things feel normal.

orangerazzmatazz: (Confused)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-30 04:16 am (UTC)(link)

"Yeah, it was a good idea when it benefited me! Otherwise it's just a joke!"

He casts a glare at his brother. "No! It's definitely fine!" Even as he says this, he coyly moves through the menu to double check the difficulty.

He switches it from normal down to easy.

It's fine.

"Ready to go?" He asks, situating himself back in his bean bag.

orangerazzmatazz: (Innocent)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)

Mikey stares at him innocently and switches back to the level. He had no idea what his brother is talking about.

There is a little comfort in the fact that he can trust that neither of them will tell Leo about how much they're struggling with this game.

However, he's 99% certain that Leo would be just as bad at it, if not worse. With his lack of patience but overwhelming determination to win, it would be interesting at the very least.

Maybe he and Donnie can get all of the stars and then they can rub it in Leo's face when he struggles. It's only fair as his brothers.

"Just listen to me this time." He said with heavy implication.

This is everything and nothing like working in a kitchen, but Pizza Supreme forbid he lets Donnie anywhere near his oven after this. Not that Donnie would use it for actual baking. That was worse.

orangerazzmatazz: (Sus think)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-30 05:08 am (UTC)(link)

Mikey rolls his eyes, a more subtle gesture, but it's still there.

"You chop and then you do everything else that needs to be done! I can't do everything Donnie," he says. It's like he has to do everything around here!

He quickly and purposely starts the level before Donnie has a chance to retort again.

orangerazzmatazz: (Glare)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-30 05:39 am (UTC)(link)

If Mikey hears the mutterings, he's blatantly ignoring them. All of his focus is on the game and he has no time for his brothers ramblings. There is a kitchen to run!

Honestly, who knows how long they end up playing the game. Probably far longer than they should have. Both for their physical and mental health, but also for their relationship.

If anybody has come by in their time of playing, Mikey certainly didn't notice.

But they finish the game. They didn't perfect all the levels, not yet at least, but they make it to the end and Mikey feels some level of satisfaction.

He flops back, exhausted in his seat and lets the controller fall into his lap.

"I never want to look at a little guy in a kitchen ever again," he mutters to the ceiling. This is a lie, they both know that he'll drag Donnie back in again in a week to try and 3 star all the levels.

orangerazzmatazz: (Soft)

[personal profile] orangerazzmatazz 2024-11-30 06:10 am (UTC)(link)

"Agreed," Mikey lies. "This game was a mistake," he says, as if he hadn't picked it, as if they hadn't just spent what was probably the whole day or night or whatever finishing the thing.

He was going to dream about this stupid game for years.

Maybe it would at least drown out some of the real nightmares.

Mikey rolls a little so he can better face his brother. "Thanks for playing with me Dee."
