History: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This iteration of the adolescent warrior terrapins follows the development of four mutant turtles who for the most part are just living their best lives doing typical unsupervised teenager things. That is, until they stumble upon the origin of their coming into being and inadvertantly find out that there's actually... a whole lot of weird stuff going on in New York that they can't just step away from. Martial arts is literally in their blood, their human DNA belonging to one of the greatest (relatively speaking) martial arts action film stars ever, Lou Jitsu. Unbeknownst to them, that same star is their very own mutant rat father whom had fallen to the same, if accidental fate of becoming mutated during his escape with the young turtles from the yokai warrior alchemist who had created them with the intent of forming an unstoppable army of skilled mutant fighters. (That's a lot to take in, I know).
As the boys involve themselves in the task of becoming self-appointed heroes they also uncover more of the hidden side of New York, the existence of yokai and mystic powers, and a dark and mysterious enemy that has deep ties with their own father, Splinter. These discoveries come to a head that eventually has Splinter realize that he must put his boys through serious ninja training in order to prepare them against the great evil his clan has been charged with guarding against for years; the return of the Shredder.
Personality:
Donatello is the brains of his brothers and he knows it, a little too much. While he does care for his family and friends, at times how they act clashes with his ego and how he believes things should be. He has a very specific mindset of how to operate and it often doesn't mesh very well with the lax attitudes of his siblings. He has tried to address this problem with the same approach he takes with technology, attempting to fix things. In such he's learned the hard way that he does in some way appreciate the way his brothers are, as they are, even if they do drive him a little crazy. One may think that he may not mesh well with his siblings, but he has his own brand of recklessness and more than a little penchant for violence.
Donnie is not an extremely touchy-feely person. He can at times be aloof, emotionally detached from things that may otherwise tug at his brothers' heartstrings. This does not mean he is emotionless as he's perfectly capable of being frustrated, angry, happy, disappointed or upset. He does however have trouble expressing his genuine feelings at times. He has personal boundaries that are often tested by his family's clinginess, although there are times when he doesn't mind the group hugs. There's no doubt that he cares deeply about his family, which includes his brothers, his father, and their human friend April, and he would do anything for them. He respects Raphael but feels his older brother can work a bit more on his tactics. Both Donnie and Leonardo are the middle children and tend to flip-flop between rivals and partners in crime. When it comes to his little brother Michaelangelo, Donnie's very protective of him and the two seem to have a strange sort of relationship that allows them to work well together, two chaotic forces synced with common goals. With April, Donnie just simply feels at ease with her and loves her company. Despite her being older than them she confides in him often for technical help or school projects, and she's always willing to go out of the way to help him in turn.
As a consistent overachiever who just wants to be acknowledged for his brilliance, Donnie is just as quick to distance himself from failures, forgoing any responsibility he may have had whenever something inevitably goes horribly wrong. He is very confident in his tech and overconfident in his intelligence and abilities overall, and gets very concerned when something isn't working correctly because that just isn't something that can be allowed to happen. Since he and his family live in secret beneath the city streets of New York, the boy has had to make most of his tech from scratch, having quite the aptitude for it. He has every reason to be proud of his achievements and has engineered and created amazing things, as well as a lot of things that fourteen-year olds probably shouldn't be creating. Sometimes he'll genuinely wow his brothers, although that really isn't too difficult to do but he relishes it all the same. What he really desires is what any kid wants, attention, acknowledgment and praise from adult-figures for his accomplishments.
A nerd and proud of it, Donatello is a lover of science, botany, libraries and gaming, but is not above having fun with his brothers and enjoying the opportunity to dance. Naturally he gets very attached to his technological creations and considering that most of the time he's had free rein over his projects (likely because no one else ever cares or understands what he's doing), he's never considered possible boundaries that should not be crossed, or whether or not his weapons are a bit overkill. As a self-proclaimed man of science, he has problems with the mystical and magical. This in part stems from some envy of his brothers on the account that they all have taken to using magic weapons that have given them access to extraordinary abilities. Truthfully the other reason that he has an aversion to magic is because of his inability to understand it, and it makes a point of insecurity with him that has led him to believe that if magic can do everything science can, then his team wouldn't have any need for him. Eventually with April's help he accepts that magic can have its uses, but more importantly that he is reassured that he would never be replaced because it's not about tech or magic, but about who he is.
Abilities:
Donnie is the brains and resident tinkerer of his brothers' team. He's created amazing gadgets and weaponry from scavenged (and potentially illicitly procured) parts to make his family's life easier (and sometimes more problematic).
As the son of a martial artist he has been heavily influenced by his father's career as have all his brothers, learning ninjutsu and favoring the techniques of the bo which matches his eye for precision and efficiency. Of his brothers he might actually be the most coordinated when it comes to using his weapon in a fight, and he's proven himself quite capable with a staff without making use of the tech built into it. His reflexes and agility are top-notch but not without limitations. Although while being a mutant he is considerably more durable than the average organic species, his vulnerability for his soft-shell has him rely on creating battle shells for added protection as well as advantages such as flight or additional appendages.
Later on as he and his brothers learn more about their father's past and their clan's duty to be vigilant in the case of the Shredder's return, they also find out they have the ability to tap into an ancient power called ninpo, which connects their family and manifests in mystic abilities tailored specifically to each of them. Raphael, Leonardo and Michaelangelo make early use of this through the focus of magic weapons they found, while Donatello only discovers later his capabilities, creating mystic tech where he can form any technical weapon he can conceive out of some kind of hardlight to devastating proportions. ...although likely he may not be able to make use of this ability here given the separation of his family. From when I am taking him however, he has not yet reached this point so we don't have to worry about it for now~
